Rafael Cortes

Rafael Cortes (he/him) is a master’s student in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California, entering his final year. He earned his B.A. in Community and Global Public Health from the University of Michigan. Rafael first joined the Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health as a Summer Intern in 2021, where he worked under Dr. Kathleen Pike to help develop a multidimensional index assessing organizational capacity to support workplace mental health. He conducted literature reviews, administered surveys, and interviewed professionals from diverse industries, contributing to reports and publications that informed global mental health practice. In 2025, he returned as a Management Intern, supporting the summer program by reviewing applications, coordinating interviews, preparing materials, and drafting communications.

Rafael is currently conducting cancer therapy research in the Wang Molecular Engineering Lab, where he helps engineer ultrasound-controlled CAR T cells and develop molecular tools to monitor live-cell processes. His broader interests lie at the intersection of biomedical technology, mental health, and health equity, particularly for underserved communities. He also volunteers with USC’s Mobile Clinic and Flying Samaritans, providing free screenings and Spanish interpretation at community health events, and he’s passionate about mentorship and creating inclusive spaces for first-generation and underrepresented students.

Looking ahead, Rafael is preparing to transition into the medical device industry or pursue an accelerated nursing program. He hopes to continue blending technical innovation with compassionate care to improve health outcomes and advance equity.
