ICD-11 Training

Two ICD-11 Training Programs for Health Professionals

The Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health has developed two forms of training for global health professionals on using the Clinical Descriptions and Diagnostic Requirements (CDDR) for ICD-11 Mental, Behavioural and Neurodevelopmental Disorders in clinical practice.

Self-guided online training modules in English and Spanish

The first is a set of 15 self-guided online training modules, each focusing on a different topic or grouping within ICD-11 mental, behavioural and neurodevelopmental disorders. Training modules are available in both English and Spanish. (Five of the units are not yet available in Spanish.) Each module takes about 60 – 90 minutes to compete, and includes narrated teaching material, knowledge check questions, two clinical cases, and a concluding knowledge test. A certificate of participation is provided for each module that is successfully completed. These training modules are currently being pilot tested, but anyone can set up an account. There is no charge for accessing the training units. After the pilot test is completed, they will be made available without charge to health professionals around the world.

Synchronous (live) training courses with renowned global experts

Through the Global Mental Health Academy (GMHA). we offer state-of-the-art training courses on the identification, diagnosis and assessment of mental, behavioral and neurodevelopmental disorders based on the ICD-11. The courses are online, but are delivered live (synchronously). GMHA works with governments, health systems, scientific and professional societies and other educational institutions to design customized professional development opportunities. The Global Mental Health Academy provides both introductory and advanced courses of varying lengths and formats. Our courses prepare health professionals to implement the new ICD-11 Clinical Descriptions and Diagnostic Requirements (CDDR) in their clinical settings.

The courses offered by the Global Mental Health Academy emphasize active participation through application of the CDDR to clinical cases and participant panel discussions of diagnostic dilemmas. A certificate of participation is provided for all courses, which eligible participants may use to obtain continuing education credits. Our faculty are renowned global experts in psychopathology with extensive knowledge and experience with the ICD-11. Our faculty initiated this training methodology in 2016 for ICD-11 field studies conducted by International Field Study Centres around the world. This methodology produced very high reliability and clinical utility for the ICD-11, outperforming the ICD-10.
