Merrian Brooks is a pediatrician and adolescent medicine specialist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. She is also the Lead Pediatrician and Research Director of the Botswana-UPENN Partnership. Dr. Brooks is a global health focused physician-researcher whose research portfolio includes screening for common mental disorders, integration of mental health services into various medical and non-medical settings, and understanding the contextual factors of introducing evidence-based mental health interventions for globally underserved adolescents. Currently, she spends most of the year in Gaborone, Botswana, in Southern Africa, and also spends time as an attending physician in adolescent medicine in the Craig Dalsimer Division of Adolescent Medicine at CHOP. Dr. Brooks received her D.O. from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she was selected to serve as a primary care teaching fellow as a senior medical student. She later also received a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, with a focus on clinical science. Dr. Brooks completed her residency at Cooper Children’s Regional Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. She also is a board-certified adolescent medicine physician, having finished her fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and also completed the David Pincus Pediatric Global Health Fellowship at CHOP. Dr. Brooks is profoundly interested in improving the health systems and promoting positive indicators and overall well-being of adolescents in low- and middle-income countries.
